Versatile anti-slip socks in hospital use

New kind of anti-slip socks developed in Finland, CareCare Instant Grip Socks provide ample aid for patients and nurses alike. On hospital wards, Instant Grip Socks have been used for patients with memory disorders, for example, and for surgical, neurological, in-bed and wheelchair patients, among others. The sock has been used as an aid to prevent slipping when moving about indoors, while washing up, in bed, and when standing up from bed. The high-friction surface of Instant Grip Socks prevents slipping, thanks to which patients who have weak lower limbs or are prone to falling feel themselves safe when starting to move. Indeed, patients have felt that wearing grip socks increases their sense of security. With the lowering of the mobilisation threshold, moving about independently becomes easier and rehabilitation becomes faster and smoother. A patient capable of moving around independently also makes the nurses’ work easier. Some wards have replaced expensive hospital shoes with Instant Grip Socks. As it is, patients seem to take hospital shoes with them upon discharge every now and then.

In-bed patients: Orthopaedic, operated patients (back, knee or hip surgery) may feel themselves weak after the procedure. Postoperative recovery is faster when shifting position in bed is easier and can be done independently. While wearing Instant Grip Socks, the patient need not push their foot hard against the bed but can do the pushing with less muscle strength. Standing up from bed can also be done with less muscle energy, which makes it easier for the patient to go to the toilet, for example.

In neurological patients (e.g. AVH, Parkinson’s and MS patients) with weak muscle strength, the Instant Grip Sock can be used to facilitate all kinds of transitions (e.g. moving around with a walker or moving from bed to wheelchair). In neurological patients and the elderly, Instant Grip Socks are especially suitable for wet areas to prevent the risk of slipping.

For patients with memory disorders, Instant Grip Socks – multi-purpose anti-slip socks – provide safety and support for toilet visits at night. As it is, when getting out of bed at night, patients with memory disorders may forget to put on their hospital shoes. Instant Grip Socks can be worn throughout the night to ensure secure slip prevention when moving about at night.

In wheelchair-bound patients, Instant Grip Socks can be used to increase friction between the foot and the floor. If the patient moves by pulling with their foot or feet, the movement can be achieved with less force while wearing grip socks.

Finding suitable footwear for swollen or otherwise different feet (bunions, operated feet, missing toes) can be difficult in hospital conditions. Thanks to its flexible properties, the Instant Grip Sock fits and adapts to the to shape of any foot.

When the patient is discharged from hospital, they can be given exercises to be performed in bed (e.g. lifting the hip and lifting a single leg). The prescribed exercises are easier to perform with proper grip on the feet. In particular, people with weak muscle strength in their lower limbs or who otherwise have difficulties with maintaining balance will benefit from the extra ‘grip’ or friction under their feet.
